Fabrics
Models with a Castilian and European reminiscence

Wools, both in their original colours and dyed, are generally used to make blankets which are produced from the yarn which is then woven on large wooden looms, and, later, various cloths are sewn together to obtain the sizes required for different uses. A large range of designs are produced on these fabrics, and among the most common are the spike and dog's tooth check. When it comes to colours, blue and pink (always combined with white) are most popular.

The loom was first introduced to Fuerteventura with the Spanish colonization, where it was addapted to deal with the various raw materials used: linen, cotton, sheep´s wool or silk.
Traditionally, the most popular textile in Fuerteventura is that made of sheep´s wool. Most of the woven fabric in Fuerteventura comes in colours white, brown and beige -the natural colours of whool in Fuerteventura.

Textiles produced in Fuerteventura were both to be transformed into clothing (blankets, coats, trousers, saddlebags, rucksacks, etc…) and for their export to the Iberian Peninsula. All these goods are still being porduced by some crafstmen in Fuerteventura. There is a “salvage operation” in Tuineje in order to recover the traditonal patterns and fabrics.

The nature of the fabric woven in the loom depends on the technique and the origin of the threads used. According to the technique the fabrics can be Tejido Plano (Plain Fabric ), Cordon de Rosa (Pink Lace ), Tafetaán (Tafeta ) and Manta de Tachones. Another kind of fabric well present on the island is that made of bands of cloth, Traperas. This fabric is used to produce bedspreads, curtains, carpets, etc…
