There are 12 churches and some 20 hermitages scattered along Fuerteventura. Churches were built as the centre piece of newly developed villages soon after the conquest of the Canary Islands. Most of these have been modified over the years, some due to pirate attacks, some others due to fires and some have been enlarged in order to accomodate the growing number of parishioners. The most important church is located in Betancuria, the former capital of Fuerteventura. Built around 1.405 AD, the temple was remodelled in the 17th century and preserves some features from the original structure, such as the belltower and some sections of the columns. Inside, it is worth mentioning the choir, the baptistry, the baroque reredos and a fine Mudejar coffered ceiling. Hermitages were mostly constructed and paid for by the islanders themselves, therefore they are extremely simple in their design and ornamentation. Dinamatik Web Studio. Copyright 2006 |
