This autochthonous sport is a kind of fencing but practised with different size batons (“palo,”vara”, ”lata”, ”garrote”, ”macana”, ”sorinque”, “palo boyero”, etc…). One player attacks using a variety of well defined moves, while the other player defends. During the fight each player will have to look directly into the opponents eyes as they will reveal when the next “palo” will begin. Both players have to fight in complete silence and let the “palos” do the talking. As a result we will hear a nice composition of wistles and strikes, both caused by the movement of the palo. This sport is even taught in schools where young Canarian kids can learn the ancient tradition. Source: Ayuntamiento de Antigua. Oficina de Turismo.
