In Spain, according to Law 4/89, "protected areas" are spaces within the national territory, including the continental waters and the sea spaces subject to national jurisdiction containing elements and natural systems of particular interest or remarkable natural aspects. By using their own competences in the issue, most of the Spanish Autonomous Regions have formalized the definition of natural space and the features a place must have in order to be considered in such a way. Nowadays, there is a growing feeling among the islanders and the institutions that Fuereventura's natural heritage has to be well looked after and protected. That is why many places on the island have special status in order to make them "protected areas". Access to such places is somehow restricted and attention has to be paid to the restrictions imposed on passers by, you can check these restrictions in the various sights you will find on the spot: in some areas camping is strcitly forbidden, in some others access by motor vehicles is forbidden.
