Both “Rondallas” (a music group consisting on string instruments, especially Spanish guitars and Majorero timples) and “Parrandas” (group of musicians or aficionados singing and playing instruments from dusk until dawn) are perhaps the most representative folk manifestations nowadays. Certain cultural associations are conducting thorough research on the origins of musical traditions: songs, instruments being played and the typical costumes. The Canary Islands have developed various autochthonous musical styles: “Folías”, “Isas”, “Malagueñas” and “Seguidillas” are the most important. Typical costumes differ from one village to another and there are even different costumes within the same village that are used depending on the “fiesta” that is to be celebrated. Folk singers have a very strong voice. The lyrics speak about old costumes and histories. The most distinctive instrument is the “timple”, which is a variation of the Spanish guitar. Some other instruments are made of goat bone. Dinamatik. Copyright 2005. |
