Fuerteventura possesses a rich and peculiar culture that has been preserved over the years despite external influences and the huge changes the island has endured. There are traces of this ancient culture present in many places and corners of today’s Fuerteventura, giving the island a special charm.

Both the historical heritage and the cultural manifestations in Fuerteventura bring us closer to the island’s cultural origins and help us in understanding its present.

The fortresses and fortifications tell us a great deal about the need for protection against pirate attacks Fuerteventura endured. The various pieces of sacred art, mainly in the former island’s capital –Betancuria-, speak about a period of history in which the catholic cross and conquistadores’ sword marched together. The island’s colonial type architecture combines both elements of the Iberian Peninsula and the Spanish American colonies styles. Therefore, a melting pot having both European and American features. Wind-mills, flour-mills (“Tahonas”), salt gardens, lime ovens, etc… tell us about the old days’ sources of wealth.
